RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation
Adopt the Resolution DECLARING SEPTEMBER 15 TO OCTOBER 15, 2020, AS NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH.

Body
SUMMARY:
Each year, Americans celebrate the culture, heritage, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Latin America and the Caribbean during National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15.

The Organization for Latino Affairs (OLA) has celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month with presentations and events at Valley Water to increase awareness of the diversity of Hispanic and Latino cultures and to recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino-Americans, as well as their important presence within Santa Clara County.

Due to the observed disproportionate effect that the ongoing pandemic has had on the Latino community, this year's Hispanic Heritage Month theme is "Health and Social Inequity in the Age of COVID19". With this theme OLA would like to educate the Valley Water community and raise awareness on the socioeconomic and environmental conditions that become determinants in our health and learn about what we can do to try to reverse these conditions.

In observance of this theme, the Wellness Program and OLA will be hosting various joint virtual talks where various Latino focused COVID-19 related disparities will be discussed. The event will be held virtually with the following topics:

* Sept 15: Social Determinants of Health Affecting the Latino Community
* Sept 23: Diabetes
* Sept 30: Nutrition, obesity, and heart health
* Oct 7: What can we do to reduce health disparities within the Latino community and become healthier together.

The event is intended to educate and guide others as they learn the disproportionate impact COVID-19 has had on the Latino Community and the reasons behind this.
