RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation
A. Note the candidacy of Director John L. Varela for Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) Region 5 Board Chair;
B. Consider the Region 5 Nominating Committee recommended slate or vote for individual candidates as indicated on the attached ballot; and
C. Authorize the Board Chair to complete and sign the ballot.

SUMMARY:
ACWA is the largest statewide coalition of public water agencies in the country. Their more than 460 public agency members collectively are responsible for 90% of the water delivered to cities, farms and businesses in California. The mission of ACWA is to provide comprehensive leadership, advocacy and resources for California public water agencies to ensure a high quality and reliable water supply in an environmentally sustainable and fiscally responsible manner.

ACWA serves the water industry and the public by promoting local agencies as the most efficient means of providing water service; sharing reliable scientific and technical information; tracking and shaping state and federal water policy; advocating for sound legislation and regulation; and facilitating cooperation and consensus among all interest groups.

ACWA's membership is organized into 10 hydrologic regions. Santa Clara Valley Water District is located within Region 5. Each Region's structure promotes grassroots activism by uniting members around geography and shared interests and challenges. The role of each Region is to support ACWA's goals, engaging in local outreach efforts, and educating ACWA's membership through tours and events. The elected chair and vice chair of each Region Board sits on the ACWA Board of Directors for tis two-year term of office.
