SUMMARY:
This Resolution provides the Board an opportunity to express appreciation to Dan McCorquodale for his dedicated years of public service in Santa Clara County and the State of California.
The Honorable Dan McCorquodale was first elected to serve in the California State Legislature in 1982, representing the 12th Senate District, which then comprised a large portion of Santa Clara County-including north, east and central San Jose, the Cities of Campbell, Milpitas, Morgan Hill-and all of Stanislaus County. Following redistricting, he represented all of Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Tuolumne and Madera Counties as well as portions of San Joaquin and Fresno Counties. He was reelected in 1986 and again in 1990.
During his tenure in the Legislature, Senator McCorquodale was Chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Water Resources as well as the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Wildlife. He authored legislation with far-reaching importance in several areas including revamping the State Water Plan, water reclamation, natural resource conservation, consumer protection, securities regulation, local governmental revenue, and the humane treatment of animals.
Senator McCorquodale was also a member of the Pacific Fisheries Legislative Task Force and in 1993 and 1994, chaired this group of representatives from five western states to serve as a clearinghouse for information regarding fishing in the Pacific Ocean. Following his service in the State Senate, he was appointed to the California Medical Assistance Commission, which was responsible for negotiating contracts with hospitals throughout the state to provide medical care to Medi-Cal recipients.
Prior to serving in the State Senate, Dan McCorquodale was elected to three terms on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, representing north and east San Jose, a portion of the City of Santa Clara, and the Cities of Milpitas and Sunnyvale, and twice served as Board President.
In addition to his local leadership on parks and open space, air quality and the environment, transportation, justice, and health and human services, he also represented Santa Clara County on many regional and state-wide bodies, including the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the Bay Conservation and Development Commission, the Association of Bay Area Governments, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and the Advisory Council of the State Office of Planning and Research.
Born in Longville, Louisiana, Dan McCorquodale grew up in Newton, Texas, and first moved to San Jose in 1970 to work as a special education teacher at the Evergreen School District, where he initiated the first Educationally Handicapped Program for the school district. He previously resided in San Diego County and in 1964, he became the youngest person ever elected to the Chula Vista City Council. He was later the City’s first elected Mayor, a position he served from 1968 to 1969. A military veteran, Dan McCorquodale served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956, achieving the rank of Sergeant.
In the years following his retirement, he remained active in social causes, advocating for human rights and environmental issues, and served for many years on Santa Clara Valley Water District's (Valley Water) Safe, Clean Water and Natural Flood Protection Program Independent Monitoring Committee.
In each of these roles, the Honorable Dan McCorquodale has worked extensively to improve the wellbeing of all Californians and this year, he celebrates his 90th birthday.
To recognize former Senator and Supervisor McCorquodale’s distinguished career, honor his contributions to public policy and local government, and thank him for his partnership with Valley Water over the years, staff has prepared this Resolution of Appreciation.
