Body

SUMMARY:

The FIRST Lego League program is an international competition for elementary and middle-school students. Each year FIRST Lego League introduces a scientific and real-world challenge for students to focus on. Students identify a real-world problem and create a solution, they also design and program Lego Mindstorm robots to complete tasks related to the overall theme of HydroDynamics for the 2017/18 challenge.

In March, several teams were selected to enter the Northern California Innovation Expo, after

progressing through multiple levels of local and regional competition. Nine of the teams reached out to the Water District to present their ideas to District staff and tour district facilities as they researched and prepared for the FIRST Lego League competitions.

Staff recommends the Board acknowledge each teams’ creative thinking and problem-solving skills as they identified a problem within the human water cycle and worked together to design an innovative solution that addressed that problem.

The nine teams are:

                     Alpha Wolves

                     Battle Chickens

                     Hydrabots

                     Hydrobots

                     Krazy Argo Kids

                     Lego Leprechauns

                     Mindstorm Minions

                     Techno Wizards

                     Xbots

These teams promoted environmental stewardship of our water supply to ensure safe, clean water for a healthy life, environment, and economy, now and into the future.
