Recommendation
Adopt the Resolution DECLARING MARCH 2023 AS NATIONAL WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH.
Body
SUMMARY:
The Office of Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) recommends that the Board formally acknowledge and declare March 2023 as National Women’s History Month, a federal designation corresponding with International Women’s Day, observed on March 8th.
The first International Women’s Day was commemorated in the United States in 1911. The first official acknowledgment of Women’s History Day was made in 1978 by a school district in Sonoma, California. Finally, in 1987 Women’s History Month gained federal recognition.
The commemoration of Women’s History Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of all women throughout history to current times. Every year, Santa Clara Valley Water District proudly joins the observance of National Women’s History Month and commemorates the occasion through educational activities led by employee resource groups in collaboration with the Office of REDI.
