RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation
A. Consider request from Chair Santos to send a letter to Governor Brown requesting that the State Health Building in Sacramento be renamed after Dr. Mario G. Obledo; and
B. Authorize Chair to sign and send letter.
Body
SUMMARY:
Dr. Mario G. Obledo, was a devoted leader of Civil Rights affairs for more than 50 years. He worked diligently to advance the civil rights and humanitarian causes that concerned Hispanics in our nation.
Dr. Obledo was a co-founder of MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund), and the Hispanic National Bar Association, and instrumental in gaining national attention and support for these organizations. He was also founder and held the position of President of the National Coalition of Hispanic Organizations, as well as Co-Founder of the Southwest Voter Registration Project.
As California Secretary of Health and Welfare, Dr. Obledo was significant in getting thousands of Hispanics into state government. He is credited for opening doors of employment, freedom, challenge and opportunity to all Americans, and assuring us of a stronger and more perfect union.
