BOARD AGENDA MEMORANDUM
SUBJECT:
Title
Resolution to Support District Employees Post Janus v. AFSCME.
End
RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation
Adopt the Resolution TO SUPPORT DISTRICT EMPLOYEES POST JANUS V. AFSCME.
Body
SUMMARY:
Janus v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 31, is a U.S. labor law case currently under consideration by the U.S. Supreme Court, concerning the right of labor unions to collect fees from non-union members for the service of collective bargaining. The case was brought forward by an agency fee payer, and the U.S. Supreme Court’s future decision in the matter could restrict unions from requiring dues from non-member employees who benefit from collective bargaining, thereby weakening the unions’ power to effectively negotiate on behalf of all public-sector workers.
Unions across California and the rest of the country are bracing for an adverse decision in the Janus case.
By adopting the management/union collaboratively drafted proposed Resolution Supporting District Employees Post Janus v. AFSCME, the Board is confirming their support of organized labor as well as support for District employees to participate in service to our communities through good labor relations in a post-Janus world.
