SUMMARY:
Friends of the San Francisco Estuary (Friends) is a non-profit organization created in 1991 with the mission of protection, restoration and enhancement of the San Francisco Bay-Delta Estuary through the implementation of the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan or Estuary Blueprint. Friends has sought to involve the public in improving the health of the Estuary by sponsoring the biennial State of the Estuary Conference and also presenting the Outstanding Environmental Project Awards during the conference. These awards are presented to exceptional projects that show measurable results, demonstrate the value of partnership, and further the goals and objectives of the Estuary Blueprint. In October 2017, the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project (SBSPRP) was selected for its Phase 1 achievements.
The president, Mr. Mitch Avalon and the secretary, Charles Batts of Friends will present the award to the District Board as the District is one of the major partners of the SBSPRP. Some of District contributions to the Phase 1 achievements are:
* Conversion of approximately 500 acres of former salt ponds called Island Ponds, to fully tidal marsh.
* Districts funding of $2.6 million over the last three years for the scientific investigations to continue reducing uncertainties related to mercury impacts to the environment.
* Construction of the Pond A8 notch allowing conversion of 1,400 acres of the Pond A8 complex to tidally muted restoration ponds.
