BACKGROUND:

In January 2018, staff performed outreach efforts for the Board Advisory Youth Commission. To inform students who reside and attend school in Santa Clara County about the launch of the Youth Commission and to encourage them to apply, staff utilized several outreach methods to increase the reach of the message. Staff conducted the following outreach activities:

Sent out nearly 150 individual emails to students on contact list (past youth stewardship commission participants, names collected from youth conference, and other interested youth)

Reached out to 6 High School Districts that serve approximately 52,700 students; 7 Unified School Districts that serve approximately 107,462 students

Contacted individual high schools and middle schools within those school districts

Reached out to 33 private schools that serve over 15,000 students

Reached out to charter schools and continuation schools throughout the County

Contacted over 30 community based organizations that work with youth in the County, including those that specifically work with underserved youth

Utilized social media to disseminate the information: Facebook, Twitter, Nextdoor, eNews

Went to the high schools in board districts with low application numbers to pass out flyers

                     Posted flyers in local hangouts

The application period was from January 19 - March 2, 2018. We received a total of 118 completed applications
