SUMMARY:
The month of June is nationally recognized as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month) to commemorate the Stonewall riots in Manhattan, which occurred at the end of June 1969. A year after the Stonewall Riots, members of the LGBT community began to celebrate the anniversary of that significant event, which brought widespread attention to discriminatory laws and policies and gave birth to the modern LGBT civil rights movement.
Each year since 2000, the consecutive presidents of the United States issued a proclamation in recognition of LGBT Pride Month. The current administration has never recognized Pride Month in an official proclamation.
In the past year, discriminatory bathroom laws were enacted in a handful of states across the nation. The current administration in Washington, D.C. has rescinded protections for transgender students. The LGBT civil rights movement believes that other rights are now in jeopardy. The journey towards full equality continues and all people are encouraged to support the LGBT civil rights movement to continue to promote equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
During the month of June, pride events throughout the community and around the world, like parades, marches, and large festivals, were replaced this year by more somber virtual events due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other national crisis.
Valley Water will recognize LGBT Pride Month on June 1 through its annual raising of the rainbow flag in front of the District’s headquarters building.
