RECOMMENDATION:Recommendation
Adopt the Resolution DECLARING FEBRUARY 1 TO FEBRUARY 28, 2022 AS NATIONAL BLACK HISTORY MONTH.
Body
SUMMARY:
The Association of Black Employees (ABE), a Valley Water-sponsored Employee Resource Group (ERG) and the Office of Racial, Equity Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) recommends that the Board formally acknowledge and declare February 2022 as National Black History Month, which is a federal designation.
The federal government first declared Black History Month in 1976. Observance of Black History Month started in 1970 at Kent State University and propagated to other educational institutions and community organizations throughout the country.
Each year, National Black History Month is observed during the month of February to remember and acknowledge important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. Through the adoption of this resolution, Valley Water joins nationwide efforts and activities to honor the contributions of members of our Black/African American community.
