Recommendation
Adopt the Resolution COMMEMORATING THE PROMOTION OF ANTOINETTE R. GANT to the rank of Brigadier General in the United States Army and recognizing her distinguished career.
Body
SUMMARY:
The Resolution provides the Board an opportunity to commemorate the promotion of Antoinette R. Gant to the rank of Brigadier General in the United States Army.
Brigadier General Gant currently serves as the Commander and Division Engineer for the United States Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) South Pacific Division. She is the first African American female to serve as a division commander in the Corps, and she is the first African American female, active-duty engineer to reach the rank of Brigadier General.
Originally from Port Gibson, Mississippi, Brigadier General Gant graduated from Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas, as a Distinguished Military Graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a commission in the Engineer Regiment. She also holds a Master of Science in Engineering Management from Missouri University of Science and Technology and a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy from the Dwight D. Eisenhower School at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.
As Commander and Division Engineer of the South Pacific Division, a position she has held since July 2021, Brigadier General Gant oversees a workforce of more than 2,800 military and civilians across all or part of 10 states and manages a suite of water resources projects valued at more than $16 billion.
In her short tenure at the South Pacific Division, Brigadier General Gant has worked collaboratively with Santa Clara Valley Water District (Valley Water) to advance critical infrastructure projects, including the South San Francisco Bay Shoreline Project and the Upper Guadalupe River Flood Protection Project. She is a proven leader who has, time and again, helped Valley Water and the Corps arrive at creative solutions to overcome project challenges.
To recognize and honor Brigadier General Gant’s promotion, as well as her service to the nation and for helping Valley Water advance critical flood risk management projects that help ensure the safety and wellbeing of the residents of Santa Clara County, staff has prepared a resolution of commemoration.
