RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation
Adopt the RESOLUTION DECLARING FEBRUARY 1 TO FEBRUARY 28, 2023, AS NATIONAL BLACK HISTORY MONTH.
Body
SUMMARY:
The Association of Black Employees (ABE) a Santa Clara Valley Water District (Valley Water) sponsored Employee Resource Group (ERG) and the Office of Racial, Equity Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) recommends that the Board formally acknowledge and declare February 2023 as National Black History Month, which is a federal designation.
The federal government first declared Black History Month in 1976. Observance of Black History Month started in 1970 at Kent University and propagated to other educational institutions and community organizations throughout the country.
Each year, Americans observe National Black History Month during the month of February as a way to remember and acknowledge important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. Through the adoption of this resolution the Santa Clara Valley Water District honors the contributions of members of our Black/African-American/African Descent community and joins nationwide efforts and activities.
